STATE OF THE ART

Sprouting Consciousness is an oil painting exploring the evolving relationship between Nature and Technology, and the choices that may shape their shared future. At its core, the work considers the possibility that a new form of consciousness might emerge from their encounter, not as opposing forces, but as entities capable of recognising and transforming one another.

 

The painting captures a moment suspended in time: a sprout, symbolising Nature, and a machine, symbolising Technology, suddenly come to a halt and become aware of one another. This encounter marks a moment of recognition between two forces that have long been perceived as opposing. The sprout becomes more than a representation of Nature; it embodies the emergence of a new awareness, while the machine is confronted with a form of intelligence beyond its own technological construction.

 

The Past is manifested through the bare traces left in the machine’s wake, marking its trajectory of rapid and forceful movement through the natural world. The machine’s momentum is abruptly arrested, creating a suspension of time that is embodied by the pause symbol, the two vertical parallel lines positioned on the right side of the painting. This interruption creates a space for reflection: a moment in which movement gives way to awareness, and the consequences of what has already occurred become visible.

 

The future remains uncertain. When the pause ends and movement resumes, two possible paths emerge. One leads towards dissociation, conflict and environmental destruction; the other towards connection, where Technology and Nature evolve together in a mutually sustaining relationship. The painting deliberately leaves this choice unresolved, placing the responsibility not within either force, but within the consciousness of those who determine how technological progress moves forward.

 

The possibility of connection is suggested through the symbolism of the machine’s empty eye socket and the eye emerging from the ground as a green sprout. Together, these elements imply that each is incomplete without the other: Nature gives Technology vision, while Technology provides the means to transform that vision into action. Their merging suggests the emergence of a new, powerful and conscious force, one capable of bringing technological innovation into dialogue with the intelligence, resilience and interconnectedness of the natural world.

 

Ultimately, Sprouting Consciousness asks us to pause before moving forward. It invites us to consider whether progress must come at the expense of Nature, or whether a more conscious form of progress is possible, one in which technological capability and the intelligence of the natural world inform, sustain and ultimately transform one another.
